If you're new to record collecting you'll be asking "what is a promo?" A promo, or promotional release, is a record, CD or tape which is released to radio stations and TV programmes before the actual release date. Promos are meant to be used for the purposes of promoting the song only. This means they are hard to find and you can't buy them in your high street music shop! Check out Record Fairs or eBay for these rare items.

Untouchable

Sire Records PRO 74615

Untouchable (radio edit) 3.37
Untouchable (album version) 4.15

From the debut Rialto 31022-2
Street Date: April 14, 1998

US promo single, used to promote the US release of the debut self-titled album.

Comes in an album style jewel box with front and rear inlays.

Monday Morning 5:19

East West EW116CD

Monday Morning 5:19
Little Comedian
Kieslowski

Comes in a double card sleeve with promo sticker.

Dream Another Dream

East West EW156DDJ

Dream Another Dream (edit) 3.13

One track promo comes in a single card sleeve. Slightly different cover from both the commercial releases. But that's what makes hunting down promos irresistible!

Monday Morning 5:19 (widescreen)

China Records WOKCDP2095

Monday Morning 5:19 (widescreen '98 mix)
The Underdogs
Skyscraper

Promo in generic China die cut sleeve. Although it's a promo for the internet-only "widescreen" release, the tracklisting is different from the commercial one. The first of two promos for this release.

Monday Morning 5:19 (widescreen)

China Records WOKCD2095

Monday Morning 5:19 (widescreen '98 mix)
The Underdogs
Skyscraper

Promo in album style jewel box with front and rear inlays. Like the previous promo, the tracklisting is different from the commercial one. This is the second of the two promos, and probably more desirable because of the artwork.

When We're Together '98 Version

China Records WOKCDP2100

When We're Together ('98 version)

Comes in an album style jewel box with front and rear inlays. China originally planned to release this as a single in Dec '98 but apparently because of it being so close to Christmas it was feared the single would bomb so it was postponed. Shortly afterwards, China was bought out by Warner which is why the single never saw the light of day. However, the promo remains a rarity as it's the only format where one can find this particular mix.

Thanks to Ben Wilson for the above info!

Summer's Over

China Records WOKCDP2099

Summer's Over (radio edit)

Comes in album-style jewel box with front inlay, no rear artwork.

Different picture sleeve from either of the commercial singles.

Summer's Over

China Records WOKCDP2099

Summer's Over (radio edit)
Vinegar Vera
Skyscraper

Promo in generic China die cut sleeve. The tracklisting is different from the commercial one which gives a "Windswept Version" of the title track.. The second of two promos for this release.

Rialto - Album Sampler

East West PRCD 831

Tracks from the Forthcoming Album:

5:19
Dream Another Dream
Untouchable
The Underdogs
Summer's Over

Comes in a single white card sleeve with gold embossed lettering. Very collectible, as Rialto fans will know, since East West dropped the band from their label before the full album was released.

Rialto

Sire Records 31022-2P

US pre-release of the self titled debut album. Jewel box with front and rear inlays. Same tracklisting as the commercial releases.

Bio blurb on the rear inlay:

The swirling filmic sound that Rialto have conjured reminds the listener of Harry Palmer walking by the Thames to a John Barry accompaniment. In fact, the band cite Barry along with Brian Wilson, Ennio Morricone and Phil Spector as major influences on their music.

Time Out described Rialto's debut by saying "they take all that is fine in British pop, roll it to the top of a big hill and then stand back and chuckle as lesser bands are crushed by the steamrolling enormity of their album"

"Untouchable" and "Monday Morning 5:19" have both been Top 40 singles in the UK and the band recently performed on Top of the Pops following successful touring throughout Europe and Japan.

Street date: April 14, 1998.

Night On Earth
(U.K. Version)

11-track pre-release CD-R promo. Comes in jewel box with white card front inlay, no rear inlay or other artwork.

Anything Could Happen

Anything Could Happen (radio edit)

1 track promo CD-R in plastic slip case with promo sticker on reverse:

The Rialto story so far has been nothing if not unusual - despite releasing a string of Top 40 singles and selling a quarter-million copies of their debut album, misfortune led them to being dropped not once but twice by the very same "Major Corporation". While such an experience would surely dampen the spirits of a lesser band, "ANYTHING COULD HAPPEN" (released 25th June) is the sound of a revitalised band finding strength through adversity.

The lead single from the quartet's second album "NIGHT ON EARTH" (out 5th July), this sweeping, heart-swelling song serves both as a reminder to the faithful as well as an introduction to the uninitiated to the band's Cinemascope world.

London Crawling

Koch Records KOC-DS-8369

London Crawling (single edit) 3.30
Someone That She Used To Know 2.51
Catherine's Wheel (live acoustic version) 4.31

Comes in album-style jewel box with front inlay, and rear artwork.

US promo release, used to promote the "Night On Earth" album. Different picture sleeve from the English "London Crawling" single, but mirrors the album cover.

Louis Eliot
Falling Through The Days

10 track promo CD-R in plastic slip case.

Now a rarity, as the album was titled "The Long Way Round" on its eventual release.

Also, the final release has 11 tracks, as "Emily" was included in the final line-up. The tracks were also re-sequenced, making for a much better flowing album.
